How to Put Together the Perfect Bridesmaid Proposal Box

Asking your closest friends and family to be part of your wedding day is one of the most meaningful moments of the planning process. A bridesmaid proposal box turns that ask into an experience — something thoughtful, personal and completely unforgettable. Here's everything you need to know about putting one together.

What is a bridesmaid proposal box?

A bridesmaid proposal box is a beautifully presented gift box given to each person you're asking to be part of your bridal party. Think of it as a mini gift hamper — curated with things they'll love, personalised with their name and role, and finished with a heartfelt message that makes the ask feel as special as it deserves to.

It's a relatively recent tradition that has taken off in New Zealand and shows no signs of slowing down. And for good reason — it turns what might otherwise be a casual conversation into a proper moment, and gives your bridesmaids, maid of honour or flower girls something tangible to remember it by.

What goes inside a bridesmaid proposal box?

This is entirely up to you — and that's part of what makes it so personal. The box itself holds the gift, so you can fill it with almost anything. Popular choices include:

  • A bottle of wine, champagne or a favourite spirit
  • Personalised wine glasses or drink bottles
  • Candles or bath products
  • Jewellery or hair clips and accessories for the wedding day
  • A robe, sleepwear or a luxe eye mask
  • A face mask or skincare treat
  • Chocolates or treats they love
  • Anything else that feels right for that specific person

The best proposal boxes feel curated rather than generic — a mix of something indulgent, something useful and something personal. You know your people better than anyone, so trust your instincts.

How to personalise the box itself

The box is where Saint Sauvant comes in. Our proposal boxes are made from a premium magnetic-lid gift box — sturdy, luxe and substantial in the hand. We personalise the outside with the recipient's name and title in precision-cut vinyl, so each box is uniquely theirs the moment they receive it.

Our large boxes (350 x 300 x 100mm) are the most popular choice for proposal boxes — they're generous enough to hold a meaningful selection of gifts and give the whole presentation a real sense of occasion. And here's the detail that makes the moment: we can add a personalised message inside the lid, so when your bridesmaid opens the box, the first thing she sees is your ask. "Will you be my bridesmaid?" on the inside lid, her name on the outside — it's a simple combination that never fails to land.

How many boxes do you need?

As many as you have people to ask. Bridal parties come in all sizes — some couples have one bridesmaid, others have five or more. We make each box to order so there's no minimum quantity. Whether you need one box or ten, each one will be made with the same care and attention.

When should you give them?

There's no rule — but most couples give proposal boxes a few months after getting engaged, once the excitement has settled and you're starting to think seriously about who you want by your side. Giving them early also gives your bridesmaids time to save the date and get involved in planning if they want to.

Some couples do a group reveal where everyone opens their box together, which makes for a beautiful and very photogenic moment. Others prefer to give them individually for a more intimate experience. Both work — it really depends on your group.

A note on the small boxes

Our small boxes (180 x 180 x 80mm) are a great option if you're keeping things simple or working with a tighter budget. They're perfectly sized for jewellery, a candle or a few smaller items. The main difference is that the smaller size doesn't accommodate an inside lid message — so if the personal touch inside the lid matters to you, the large box is the one to go for.

Making each box feel individual

If you have a larger bridal party, it can be tempting to make every box identical. And while the personalised name and title on each box already makes them feel individual, consider varying the contents slightly for each person too — the maid of honour might get something a little extra, or you might tailor the treats to each person's taste. Those small differences are what turn a lovely gesture into something truly personal.
